For three years, Marcus had run the agency almost alone. Two employees, forty clients, every decision going through him. He was proud of it. He worked late, worked weekends, worked through holidays he had technically booked. Then one afternoon a client called to say they were happy with a campaign, and Marcus realised he felt nothing. Not relief, not pleasure β nothing. He went home, sat on the sofa, and didn't move for four hours. He hadn't seen it coming, but looking back it was obvious: he had been burning out for over a year. He had simply been too busy to notice.
Marcus hired someone to handle client calls. Then someone else to manage social. He told himself it was delegation; what it actually was, was survival. With fewer tasks demanding his attention, he started seeing the business differently β the patterns, the bottlenecks, the clients that were costing more than they were paying. He started making better decisions in less time. He was less available and more useful. When a colleague asked how the agency was doing, Marcus said something that surprised him: it was doing better since he'd stepped back. What he meant was: since he'd finally understood that his presence everywhere was not the same thing as leadership.
