Fatima was the best student in the room, and the one least likely to show it. She answered questions only when asked directly. She kept her best essays careful and competent rather than brilliant, because brilliant attracted attention and attention, in her experience, attracted scrutiny. She had learned early that being exceptional in certain environments was not safe β it invited questions about how, and where, and whether it was really yours. She had developed, over years, a perfect system for holding back just enough to be good without being visible. The cost was that no one, including herself, had ever seen the full extent of what she could do.
A new professor gave an assignment with no word limit and no template. For the first time, Fatima wrote without restraint β the argument she actually wanted to make, the evidence she found most compelling, the conclusion she had always believed but never committed to paper. The essay was returned with two words in the margin: outstanding work. The professor asked if she would present it to the group. She said yes, and she did, and the room was quiet in the way that meant people were listening. Afterwards a classmate said: I didn't know you thought about things this way. Fatima realised that nobody had β because she had never let them. To stand out, she had not changed. She had simply, once, not held back.
